Home: Election Information: Information for Felons

During the 2005 Legislative Session, the Unicameral passed LB 53, which, among other things, allows for convicted felons to register to vote after two years following the completion of their sentence including any parole term.

Consequently, Nebraska Revised State Statutes Section 29-112 now reads in part "Any person sentenced to be punished for any felony, when the sentence is not reversed or annulled, is not qualified to vote until two years after he or she has completed the sentence, including any parole term. The disqualification is automatically removed at such time."

Therefore, any convicted felon, having completed his or her sentence and parole term, may register to vote if two years have passed. In order to register, you may fill out a new Voter Registration Application at any of our voter registration locations, or download a form from our website and mail it to the Election Commission.

You do not need to provide proof of completion of sentence or parole, however, by signing the application, you do testify under the penalty of law that you have completed your sentence and parole and have waited the required two-year period. If information becomes available that states you have not met these conditions, you will be subject to criminal prosecution.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Election Commission office.
